More and more shampoos claim things like:
- 100% natural ingredients
- 0% SLS / SLES
- kind to your hair and the planet
Sounds perfect. Exactly what you want if you are more conscious about your hair, scalp and health.
Until you turn the bottle around and high up in the ingredients list you see:
- Sodium Coco-Sulfate
- Coco-Glucoside
- Sodium Chloride
- Fragrance with Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, and so on
Many people think:
“Hold on… this still looks pretty chemical. How ‘natural’ is this really? And how gentle is it for my scalp?”
In this blog we explain:
- what “100% natural ingredients” usually really means
- why Sodium Coco-Sulfate is not an innocent coconut buddy
- how the “0% SLS/SLES” claim can still mislead you
- and why this is not an ideal base if your hair is thinning
At the end you will read how we at ZENLUCA approach this differently.
What brands usually mean by “100% natural ingredients”
“100% natural ingredients” sounds like pouring a kind of liquid coconut and herbal mix over your hair. In reality it usually means:
- the raw materials come from nature
- for example coconut, sugar, plants, minerals
- but they are then chemically processed into usable cosmetic ingredients
- such as Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Coco-Glucoside, emulsifiers, fragrance molecules
- That is not automatically bad or illegal, but it is very different from:
- pure, unprocessed oils
- ultra simple soap
- or a super minimalistic formula
In short: natural in origin, not necessarily natural in the form in which you put it on your scalp.
The real main actor: Sodium Coco-Sulfate
In many “100% natural” shampoos you see high up in the list:
Sodium Coco-Sulfate
This is not some soft coconut powder, but a powerful sulfate detergent. In everyday language:
- designed to degrease hard
- creates lots of foam
- behaves very similar to the well known Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Yes, it is made from coconut fatty acids.
But due to the chemical processing it behaves like a strong shampoo surfactant.
For your scalp it does not really matter whether a sulfate comes from petroleum or coconut, if the final molecule:
- lifts oil and dirt very aggressively
- and can irritate your skin barrier if you are sensitive
“Coco” in the name does not automatically mean “gentle and kind to your hair”.
Why “0% SLS/SLES” is correct but still misleading
Many bottles show in large print:
- 0% SLS / SLES
But on the back you still see Sodium Coco-Sulfate. How does that work?
- SLS = Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
- SLES = Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- Sodium Coco-Sulfate is officially a different INCI name
So legally a brand can say:
- there is no SLS or SLES inside
- those exact names do not appear on the ingredients list
Chemically the story is less neat:
- Sodium Coco-Sulfate is a mixture of sulfates from coconut fatty acids
- it behaves in practice like a strong sulfate shampoo
- and in terms of “impact on your scalp” it is very similar to SLS type cleansers
In short:
The claim “0% SLS/SLES” is linguistically true, but the core of your shampoo is still a powerful sulfate base under another name.
You think you are buying a sulfate free or extra gentle shampoo, while the base is still a strong detergent.
What this can do to your scalp and hair
You will not go bald from washing once. But if you have thinning hair, a sensitive scalp, or have had a hair transplant, it helps to know what frequent exposure to strong sulfates can do.
1. Dryness and irritation
Strong sulfates:
- wash away not only dirt and excess sebum
- but also part of your natural protective lipid layer
This can lead to:
- tight, dry feeling on the scalp
- itch
- flaking and irritation
An irritated, dried out scalp is not the best environment for healthy hair growth.
2. Rebound: hair gets greasy faster
If your scalp is stripped too hard every wash:
- your skin can go into overcompensation
- producing more sebum to protect itself
That looks like:
- day 1: very clean, “squeaky” hair
- day 2: roots already greasy again
Often you then wash more frequently, keeping the cycle going.
3. Weakening of the hair fibre
Strong detergents can:
- damage the protective outer layer (cuticle) of the hair
- make hair drier, rougher and more prone to breakage
Hair that breaks in the shower or while brushing looks exactly the same to you as hair that falls from the root. You simply see more hair.
4. Indirectly more visible hair loss
Sulfates are usually not the primary cause of hair loss.
But they can worsen what you see if you are already vulnerable due to:
- genetic predisposition
- stress
- hormonal changes (postpartum, for example)
- medication or illness
- a recent hair transplant
Extra irritation and low grade inflammation around follicles is exactly what you want to minimise in these cases.
How to spot this trick yourself in the store
You do not need to be a chemist to see through the marketing. Use this quick check:
Step 1: look at the first 3–5 ingredients
-
Do you see Sodium Coco-Sulfate or another something-sulfate there?
→ then it is a major base ingredient.
Step 2: compare with the front
- Does the front say “0% SLS/SLES”?
- Does it say “100% natural ingredients”?
If yes, chances are that you:
- are holding a shampoo that still cleans on a strong sulfate base
- but is sold as extra mild and natural
Step 3: ask yourself one question
If my hair is thinning or my scalp is sensitive, do I really want my daily routine built on a sulfate blend with another name?
If the answer is no, put the bottle back. No matter how green, earthy or friendly the packaging looks.
How we at ZENLUCA stay out of this game
At ZENLUCA we focus on men and women with thinning hair. People who:
- want to make conscious choices
- are tired of marketing tricks
- want a gentle, effective routine that matches the ingredients list
That is why we gave ourselves some clear rules.
1. No disguised sulfates
In our shampoos you will not find:
- SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)
- SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate)
- Sodium Coco-Sulfate as a “natural” replacement
We do not use another name to hide essentially the same aggressive behaviour.
2. Truly gentle, plant based cleansing
Instead of hidden sulfates, our shampoos use:
-
Saponaria Officinalis Extract
- also known as soapwort
- a traditional plant based cleanser that provides mild foam and washing action
-
Cetearyl Olivate and Sorbitan Olivate
- emulsifiers derived from olive oil
- help distribute oils, water and active extracts evenly over your scalp
The base of our formula consists of:
- caring oils such as jojoba and argan oil
- a high dose of plant extracts (nettle, rosemary, burdock root, ginseng, hops, saw palmetto)
- active building blocks like biotin, niacinamide, caffeine and aloe vera
- Lactobacillus ferment as natural preservation and support for the scalp microbiome
- a natural, phthalate free fragrance
This gives your scalp effective cleansing without a harsh sulfate backbone. Your barrier is not stripped with every wash, which matters if your hair is thinning and your scalp is sensitive.
Why this matters for your hair growth
Hair growth is influenced by:
- genetics
- hormones
- health, stress and lifestyle
No shampoo changes that on its own.
But your shampoo can:
- keep the environment around your follicles calm, clean and balanced
- or add extra stress, dryness and irritation
If your hair is thinning or your scalp reacts easily, you want:
- as few unnecessary triggers as possible
- mild, predictable products
- formulas that do what they promise without word games
Our shampoos and scalp serums are built exactly on that principle. No hidden sulfates, no misleading “0% SLS/SLES” labels, but a transparent, 100 percent natural base that supports your scalp instead of challenging it.
If you want to see what such a formula looks like and how to build it into your routine step by step, you can check this page for more information about our products for thinning hair.

FAQ on “100% natural” shampoo, sulfates and hair loss
-
Is Sodium Coco-Sulfate the same as SLS?
Not exactly, but it comes close. Sodium Coco-Sulfate is a mixture of sulfates made from coconut fatty acids. A large part of that mix consists of SLS like molecules. In practice it behaves like a strong sulfate cleanser, similar to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. -
Is a shampoo with “100% natural ingredients” always gentle?
No. “100% natural ingredients” says something about the origin of the raw materials, not about how harsh or soft they are for your scalp. A strong sulfate detergent from coconut (like Sodium Coco-Sulfate) can be “naturally derived” and still too aggressive for a sensitive or thinning scalp. -
How can I quickly see if my shampoo has hidden sulfates?
Look at the first 3 to 5 ingredients on the INCI list. If you see something with sulfate in the name, such as Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate, that is a main ingredient. If the front says “0% SLS/SLES” but you still see such a sulfate high on the list, you are probably dealing with a replacement trick. -
Are sulfates always bad for your hair?
Not necessarily. Some people tolerate them fine and like the very clean feeling. But with a sensitive scalp, dry, curly or thinning hair, strong sulfates can cause irritation, dryness, more breakage and a scalp that goes out of balance faster. In those situations a gentler, sulfate free base is usually a better choice. -
Can sulfates cause hair loss?
Sulfates are usually not the main cause of hair loss. Genetics, hormones, stress and health play a bigger role. But strong detergents can irritate the scalp and weaken the hair fibre. If your hair is already fragile, that can mean you see more breakage and visible shedding than necessary. -
How is the ZENLUCA shampoo different from “100% natural” shampoos with Sodium Coco-Sulfate?
Our formulas:
- contain no hidden sulfates like Sodium Coco-Sulfate, SLS or SLES
- cleanse with Saponaria Officinalis (soapwort) and olive oil derived emulsifiers instead of a harsh sulfate base
- are built from water, caring oils, plant extracts, biotin, niacinamide, caffeine, aloe and Lactobacillus ferment, plus a natural, phthalate free fragrance
In short: with us you do not get “0% SLS” on the front and still a sulfate blend on the back, but a truly 100 percent natural, scalp friendly formula that fits people with thinning hair.
