How to Stimulate Hair Growth Naturally
Hair grows slowly, and some of what drives it you can influence and some you cannot. This guide explains how hair grows, what affects it, and what you can do at home to support a healthy scalp and fuller-looking hair. It also shows where natural ingredients fit in, and when it is time to talk to a doctor.
How hair grows: the three phases
Every hair follicle repeats the same cycle:
- Growth phase (anagen): the hair grows from the root. This lasts several years, which is why scalp hair can grow so long.
- Transition phase (catagen): a short phase of a few weeks in which growth stops.
- Rest phase (telogen): the hair rests for about three months, then falls out while a new hair starts in the same follicle.
At any moment most of your scalp hairs are in the growth phase, and losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Hair grows roughly one centimetre per month. That is why changes take months, not weeks, to show.
What affects hair growth
- Genetics and hormones: the most common cause of gradual thinning is androgenetic alopecia. It runs in families and involves sensitivity to the hormone DHT.
- Stress and illness: major stress, illness, surgery or crash dieting can push many hairs into the rest phase at once. The shedding follows two to three months later. This is called telogen effluvium and is usually temporary.
- Nutrition: low iron, vitamin D, zinc or protein can play a role.
- Hormonal changes: pregnancy, the months after giving birth, and menopause.
- Scalp condition: dandruff, irritation and product build-up.
- Hair habits: tight hairstyles, heat and harsh products.
No product can change your genes. What you can do is create good conditions for the hair you have: a calm, clean scalp, enough nutrients and as little damage as possible.
What you can do yourself
- Keep your scalp clean and calm. Your scalp is skin. Wash with a mild shampoo as often as you need and rinse thoroughly so no product stays behind. Read more about why a healthy scalp is the foundation of strong hair.
- Massage while you wash. A few minutes of gentle massage helps you work products in evenly and is a harmless habit. Use your fingertips, not your nails.
- Be gentle with your hair. Avoid tight ponytails and braids that pull on the roots (why tight hairstyles can lead to hair loss) and limit heat styling.
- Eat for your hair. Hair needs protein, iron, zinc and vitamin D, among other things. Ask your GP for a blood test before you start supplements. Our guide to iron, zinc and biotin explains what to look for.
- Watch your sleep and stress. Long periods of stress can trigger shedding. Read how to recognise hair loss from stress.
- Stay consistent. Pick a routine you can keep up for months. Consistency matters more than switching products every few weeks. For more ideas, see 10 habits that can support your hair growth.
Natural ingredients that are being studied
Several plant-based ingredients are studied for scalp and hair care. The research differs a lot in strength, so here is an honest overview.
- Ecklonia cava: a brown seaweed rich in compounds called phlorotannins. Most research so far is laboratory and animal research, and human evidence is limited. Read more in our article on Ecklonia cava.
- Rosemary: a small randomised trial from 2015 compared rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil in men with androgenetic alopecia over six months, and both groups improved. It is a small study that tested rosemary oil, not finished products. See rosemary oil versus minoxidil.
- Caffeine: laboratory research on isolated hair follicles suggests it can stimulate them. Whether a shampoo that is rinsed off has the same effect on a person is less clear. Read what caffeine shampoo can and cannot do.
- Niacinamide: widely used in skin care to support the skin barrier. For the scalp, the evidence is limited.
Natural does not automatically mean effective, and these ingredients do not replace medical treatment when a doctor recommends it. Think of them as support for the scalp and the hair. Our top 3 natural ingredients article goes deeper.
A simple routine with ZENLUCA
The ZENLUCA routine has four steps and is built to be used consistently:
- Cleanse. Use the Hair Growth Stimulating Shampoo three times per week. Massage it into the scalp, leave it on for two minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- Condition. Apply the conditioner after the shampoo, leave it in briefly, then rinse.
- Roll. Use the roller once per week. Disinfect it before and after use, roll back and forth about 10 times per area with light pressure, and follow the instructions on the product page.
- Treat. Apply the serum to the scalp every day with the pipette, massage it in and let it dry before styling.
The serum is built around Ecklonia cava extract, combined with niacinamide, caffeine and panthenol. You can read every ingredient on our ingredients page. Not sure how to combine the steps? See how to use the roller and serum together, or follow the men's routine or the women's routine.
How long until you see results?
Plan for three to six months of consistent use. Hair grows about a centimetre a month, and a new growth cycle needs time to show. Day to day you will not notice a change, so take a photo of your parting or hairline in the same light once a month. Results differ per person. If you see no change after six months, or your hair loss gets worse quickly, talk to a doctor. You can read the terms of our 150 Day Guarantee.
When to see a doctor
Natural hair care supports your scalp and hair. It does not replace medical advice. See your GP if you notice:
- sudden or heavy hair loss
- round or patchy bald spots
- a red, painful, itchy or scaly scalp
- hair loss together with tiredness, weight changes or irregular periods
- hair loss after starting a new medicine
A doctor can look for causes such as iron deficiency or a thyroid problem.
Frequently asked questions
How fast does hair grow?
About one centimetre per month, a little more or less from person to person.
How long does it take to see a difference?
Most people need three to six months of consistent care, because new hair has to grow through a full cycle before you can see it.
Can I combine natural hair care with treatment from my doctor?
Often yes, but ask your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you already use a medicine on your scalp, such as minoxidil.
Does this work for women too?
The routine is for both men and women. See the women's routine for a step-by-step guide.
What is the difference between hair loss and thinning hair?
Hair loss means you shed more hairs than normal. Thinning means the hair gets finer or less dense. They can happen together, and a doctor can tell which one you have.
